dec 26, 1492 - The incident at Samana

Description:

Due to bad weather, the Spanish had to anchor off of Samana (in Haiti), where they found a settlement with dried human heads and large canoes. Heavily armed natives met them there.

One of the natives went on board the Nina and told Columbus that there was a lot of gold to be found on the island. When the Spanish left the ship to find it, they were ambushed. There was a short fight before the natives fled. However, this incident began the idea that the natives were aggressive and/or insane.
