On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, evaded an attempt to bomb his motorcade only to be shot and killed, along with his wife Sophia, by a Serbian member of the radical group the Black Hand Gavrilo Princip. Princip aimed for the unification of Yugoslavs free from Austria. The event was a watershed moment that was the most immediate cause of the First World War.
