Keep in mind that neither of these characters are technically playable in the game. They are essentially background characters to explain the origin story of Varus, who is playable.
Riot released a comic that mentions queer characters Kai and Valmar. The two are absorbed into the being known as Varus. While it's cool that Riot gave us two male gay characters... they also immediately "killed" them and thus played into the "Bury your Gays" trope. According to Riot they are not dead, but rather trapped, however, the music video may suggest otherwise. The entirety of the music video is depicting the tragedy of them losing themselves to the power of Varus.
