In her twenties, she felt God calling her to missionary work in China; however, she was not accepted as a candidate. That did not stop her, however, and she packed her bags and headed to China not under the authority of a mission sending agency. She had answered the need of an aging missionary who needed someone to help her.
In 1938, Japan invaded China. Gladys stayed and served the poor and orphans in China. She opened an orphanage and adopted several children.
She made her way back to the UK in the late 1940's, but returned to work in Taiwan several years later. She opened an orphanage and worked until she died in 1970.
