Robert F. Kennedy, a president candidate, was fatally shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, shortly after winning the California presidential primary. Martin Luther King Jr. was standing on the second-floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel as a sniper’s bullet struck him in the neck. Although he was rushed to a hospital, he was pronounced dead about an hour later. Their death marked the end of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
