On August 7, 1964, the approval of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave broad congressional approval for expansion of the Vietnam War. The resolution gave President Lyndon B. Johnson authorization, without a formal declaration of war by Congress, to use the conventional military force in Southeast Asia.
