jan 1, 1964 - Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Description:
On August 7, 1964, the approval of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave broad congressional approval for expansion of the Vietnam War. The resolution gave President Lyndon B. Johnson authorization, without a formal declaration of war by Congress, to use the conventional military force in Southeast Asia. Although President Johnson feared that the public would not support an expansion of the war, Senator Barry Goldwater criticizes him for not reinforcing the war aggressively.
