John August first uses the term probation to describe "the practice of bailing offenders out of court, followed by a period of supervised living in the community." (Abidinsky, 2017, 70) He bailed a man by permission of the court and began work as the first probation officer as an unpaid volunteer. August took the imporant first step of integrating probation into the American Justice System.
