When WWI erupted in Europe, , President Woodrow Wilson intended to remain neutrality for the United States, a stance favored by the majority of Americans. Incidents of sinking the William P. Frye, Lusitania, and the American liner Housatonic outraged President Wilson, which later delivered the war message to Congress. Although US initially struggled to maintain neutrality, America still entered the war. The war impacted US economically: it spent 358 million on arms and supplies for its allies and itself.
