jan 1, 1898 - Spanish-American War ends

Description:

Cuba’s rebellion for independence against Spain leads to the Spanish American War. Due to American economic factors, US opposed to Spain’s actions in suppressing the uprising. An unknown explosion sunk the USS Maine in Havana Harbor, causing 260 deaths out of 400 people on ship; US blamed Spain for the mysterious incident, which then declared war on Spain. On August 12, 1898, the Treaty of Paris with Spain that end the Spanish American War. Spain agreed to grant Guam, Puerto Rico to the hand of US, while the Philippines were bought for $20 million, and Cuba became a U.S. protectorate. The result of Spanish American War gradually provoked Philippine Revolution against US, AKA Philippine American War.
