apr 4, 1949 - Creation Of NATO - LUCY

Description:

In pursuit of global defense against the Soviet Union, the United States, Canada, and a number of Western European countries founded the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1949. The foundations of NATO were laid down on April 4, 1949, and the foreign ministers of 12 countries signed the treaty in Washington, D.C. The creation of the Alliance was part of a larger strategy to accomplish three objectives: preventing Soviet expansion, discouraging the return of nationalist militarism in Europe with a significant North American influence on the continent, and advancing European political unity. Its purpose was to hold peace in Europe, encourage collaboration among its members, and protect their independence. In anticipation of a Soviet attack during the Cold War, the United States and its allies established NATO, referring to it as their global strategy for containing Soviet power. In reaction to NATO, the Soviet Union established the Warsaw Pact in 1955. This pact was formally called The Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Aid, was an agreement for collective defense signed in Warsaw, Poland, by the Soviet Union and seven other socialist countries from the Soviet Bloc in Central and Eastern Europe.
