The First War of Scottish Independence's Battle of Stirling Bridge, known in Scottish Gaelic as Blàr Drochaid Shruighlea, took place. Around Stirling, on the River Forth, on September 11, 1297, the united English armies of John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey, and Hugh de Cressingham were routed by Andrew Moray and William Wallace.
