jul 19, 1952 - Soviet Union Entered Helsinki Summer Games - LUCY

Description:

Helsinki, Finland hosted the 1952 Summer Olympics, an athletic event that lasted from July 19 to August 3, 1952. The Olympic Games in Helsinki were the 12th to be held in modern times. The Cold War first dominated international tension, and the Soviet Union didn't compete in the Olympics these Summer Games. Leading up to the games, the U.S. Olympic Committee utilized the competition between East and West to create more funds for Team USA. A separate Olympic Village for Eastern Bloc nations was established after the Soviet Union declared plans to host its athletes in Leningrad and fly into Helsinki. Surprisingly, given the initial tension, the Games themselves were peaceful, and by the end, Soviet authorities had invited all competitors to stay in their village.
