jun 12, 1948 - Women's Armed Services Integration Act - Keira

Description:

On June 12, 1948, the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act was signed into law, which legally permitted women to serve as permanent members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and the Air Force. Before the Korean War, women usually served in vital wartime roles and then returned to their domestic life. However, due to their significant contributions during World War II, the Army requested that women be made a permanent part of the military. The signing of this treaty marked the ending of decades of discrimination by providing women the opportunity to serve their country in a more meaningful way. Additionally, the movement to integrate women into the military placed a significant role in advancing the women’s rights movement and disassemble gender-based discrimination into the workplace. This monumental treaty did contain unfortunate limits, such as the number of women who could serve was capped at two percent of all personnel. Nonetheless, this act symbolized progress and the ongoing fight for gender equality, and undoubtedly paved the way for future generations of women to make invaluable contributions to society.
