jan 1, 1587 - Colonists arrive in Roanoke, Virginia
Description:
This was also known as the lost colony. The Lost Colony was an English settlement on Roanoke Island (now in North Carolina). The colony mysteriously disappeared between the time of its founding in 1587 and return of the expedition’s leader in 1590. Because of the arguments with the local Native Americans, the first settlement on Roanoke Island lasted only a short period of time (1585–86). The next year, approximately 100 settlers under Gov. John White attempted to colonize the same site. The White went back to England to get supplies but was delayed by the Spanish Armada. By the time he returned to the island in August 1590, everyone had vanished.
