Yee Ah Tye learned English in Hong Kongbefore coming to America and soon became the
district association leader of the people from his
Sze Yup Province. Research into old San
Francisco newspapers revealed a darker side of
Yee Ah Tye as district head. DUring his first years
in America, Ah Tye led his people in the autocratic style he had leamed in China. The San Francisco Herald (29 May 1853) described Ah Tye as a Chinese petty despot who inflicted severe
corporeal punishment on his countrymen.
