Description:
The Novarupta vent exploded under Mount Katmai leaving the Valley of 10,000 Smokes. Although the impact was felt by people in Juneau 750 miles away, the area was not explored until 1915 by Robert Griggs of National Geographic. No one died from the eruption.Added to timeline:
