dec 1, 1804 - Napoleon becomes emperor
Description:
Napoleon participated in the coup d’etat that overthrew the Directory in 1799, and established the consulate, which he named himself first consul of. In 1804, he named himself Emperor. That same year, he introduced the Civil Code, which preserved equality for citizens in front of the law, and individuals rights to profession and religion. This allowed for ideas like religious tolerence and basic rights for men to spread all over France. But Napoleon also took away freedom of speech and press, which meant that to some degree he controlled what people heard and believed.
