jun 28, 1919 - Versailles
Description:
the peace treaty imposed on Germany,
it was seen by the Germans as unfair, a Diktat:
- 13% territory lost (Alsace-Lorraine, Eupen-Malmedy, Danzig Corridor, Wielkopolska, Saar
+ plebiscites in Upper Silesia (half given to Poland), Marienwerder, Allenstein (both stayed German), Schleswig (half given to Denmark))
- 12% population lost (half of them were Germans)
- 48% iron ore, 16% coal, 15% agricultural production lost
- Anschluss w/ Austria forbidden
- Rhineland demilitarized until 1935 (stayed part of Germany, but no military personnel allowed,
French and Belgian troops stayed)
- army limited to 100 K men, no tanks, no subs, no planes + limits on navy
- War Guilt clause
- Reperations (no concrete number yet)
Germany had no choice though,
in the event of denial the Allies would just continue marching into Germany,
this treaty built nationalistic, anti-Western attitudes within the Germans
it did, however, leave Germany with some opportunities in the East, since the old A-H and Russian empires were disbanded and replaced by weak disunited new countries
