nov 10, 1918 - Ebert-Groener Deal
Description:
The new socialist government needs the army's support
+ Ebert was a moderate and disliked the growing extremist communist movement
so he arranges a deal with the army chief Groener:
Ebert promised that the new government would not change anything in the army,
Groener promised that he would not oppose the new government
their mutual interest was in destroying the Communists,
the army was ideologically very conservative however
the long-term effect of this deal is that the military elite remained in a strong position to potentially undermine democracy later
this was also seen by the radicals as Ebert selling out,
Communist resentment towards Weimar grows
but the short term effects of consolidating the regime were secure
this is an example of how Weimar was able to survive its Early Years thanks to the competence of its leading politicians
