ppl are starving due to the blockade (Turnip Winter)
on 31 October there was a socialist sailor mutiny at Kiel in protest against the war continuing

in short ppl are unhappy,
they want an end to the war

Already in early October a new government formed out of a coalition of libs and socialists led by Prince Max von Baden,
but he gave up the position to Socialist (SPD) Friedrich Ebert,

the socialists are divided into the moderates and the radicals
and there's also the really radical communists (Spartacists)
the radicals and communists are demanding quick decisive action from the new government,
to placate them the moderate Philipp Scheidemann declares a new Republic,
Karl Liebknecht, a Spartacist leader, declares his own Republic elsewhere

the Kaiser abdicates,
this is unprecedented in German history and the Germans might not have been prepared for such a radical change
