Phase contrast microscopy is created by Frits Zernike. Microscopists can view cells (and contrasts between cells and cell walls) using phase contrast microscopy that is not feasible with conventional brightfield light microscopy. Phase contrasts are transformed into brightness variations in the viewer's eye by a phase contrast microscope. A user is now able to observe specimens that were previously only visible through cell staining techniques due to the image's greatly increased contrast
