may 1, 1925 - OPPORTUNITY PRIZE
Description:
Three hundred guests look on as Langston Hughes is awarded first prize in the Opportunity writing contest for his poem “The Weary Blues.” The next day, the New York Herald-Tribune declares that “what might not improperly be called a Negro renaissance” is underway in Harlem. Charles S. Johnson reprints the Herald-Tribune piece in the June issue of Opportunity.
