jan 1, 1665 - First Use of the Term 'Cells'
Description:
British scientist Robert Hooke made the ground-breaking discovery that cork was composed of "cells" in 1665. Hooke was intrigued by the qualities of a thin piece of cork, so he used a microscope to investigate it. He discovered that the specimen was made up of tiny compartments that resembled jail cells. Additionally, it was discovered that cork could float due to air being compressed within of the cells. Later, Robert Hooke used the term "cell" to describe his observations.
