jan 1, 1856 - The Invention of the First Synethic Dye
Description:
The first synthetic organic dye was discovered by William Henry Perkins in 1856. Mauveine, or what is currently refer to as purple, was the dye's given name by Perkins. Perkins made the discovery while trying to create a drug to treat malaria. When he became unsuccessful, he emptied out his flask and discovered that somehow a purple solution had formed. Microbiologists still were able to more quickly identify the cells in their sample according to the ground-breaking finding because they could now be stained and visable.
