jan 1, 1968 - Francesco Redi

Description:

In one of the earliest instances of a biological experiment with proper controls, Redi set up a series of flasks with various meats in 1668, with half of the flasks sealed and the other half left uncovered. The experiment was subsequently repeated, but this time he covered half of the flasks with gauze so that air could enter rather than sealing them. Despite the fact that the meat in all of the flasks had putrefied, he discovered that only the open and uncovered flasks—where flies had free access—contained maggots.
