jan 1, 1665 - Robert Hooke discovers the cell
Description:
Robert Hooke saw what he thought to "several small hole" which were discovered as "cells" in a piece of cork tree when he examined it under his microscope. According to Hooke, the cells had held the "fibrous threads" of the once-living cork tree. He believed that since he and his scientific colleges had only seen the structures in plant material, these cells could only be found in plants. His 1665 book "Micrographia: or some Physiological Descriptions of Minute Bodies produced by Magnifying Glasses with Observations and Inquiries Thereon," the first book to describe observations made through a microscope, contained the results of his nine months of experiments and observations.
