nov 8, 1923 - Beer Hall Putsch
Description:
During the regime of the Weimar Republic, there was widespread fear and unrest throughout Germany and its government. The Beer Hall Putsch (also known as the Munich Putsch) was an insurrection attempt by Adolf Hitler against the Weimar Republic.
On November 8th and 9th 1923, Hitler and his many hundreds of men (also known as 'Brownshirts') marched into a beer cellar in Munich. They seized the leaders who were gathered there and forced these men to support their proclamation of a national revolution. This was modeled on Mussolini's March on Rome the year before. Hitler's followers marched towards Marienplatz, in Munich but were met by police who fired guns at them. Some Nazis and police were killed in this exchange and Hitler and his close friends fled the scene and went into hiding. Hitler was found 2 days later, and sentenced to 5 years in prison but only served a few months before being released.
