Description:
Rene Levesque and the Parti Quebecois party called for a referendum. They wanted Quebec to negotiate an agreement with Canada on sovereignty-association. Quebec wanted to be their own country while still economically trading with Canada at the same time. Pierre Trudeau insisted that Quebec stay a part Canada and promised to negotiate a new constitution where Quebec would be recognized as a distinct society. When the vote came, 60% of Quebec voted to stay with Canada.
