sep 12, 1919 - D'Annunzio seizes Fiume
Description:
After WW1 Fiume became an international free city,
this was seen as a humiliation by nationalist Italians,
D'Annunzio takes 300 veterans and takes over the city proclaiming a new republic,
Initially the Italian government does not react,
it sends in troops only after a year has passed
this served to show how incompetent, passive and accepting of violence the Italian government was,
dissatisfaction grew
additionally this event is important, bc it inspired a lot of features in Fascism:
- weird war cries (Eja, Eja, Alala!)
- Blackshirt dress
- Roman salute
- Castor oil used to humiliate opponents
- Dramatic balcony speeches
For a while d'Annunzio was considered the main nationalist leader
