jun 30, 1931 - Electron Microscope

Description:

Ernst Ruska a physicist and Max Knoll an electrical engineer from the University of Berlin invented the first electron microscope. The scientists found a way to achieve greater resolution than of when using light. They discovered that electrons could be transmitted through the specimen and form an image. The initial electron microscope built in 1931 was the first device to prove that it was possible for electron microscopy as this prototype produced a magnification of 400x. In 1931, the TEM (transmission electron microscope) produced an image of a sample which used electrons that were pointed directly at the sample and passed through.
