In the 15th century after Vasco de Gamo's discovery of the Westerlies, Portugal gets absolutely rich off the spice trade with Asia. They also get rich with the slave trade with Africa as well since they went through all the trouble of mapping out and exploring Africa's borders. Thus, they became the first big slave traders and also the European superpower due to their wealth.
