Colombus's motivation for setting sail was to find an easier way to China/India in order to buy spices and sell them in Europe. Basically, he did it for wealth and economics.

He (and other Europeans) was trying to find an easier way to China was because the tolls and taxes were extremely high on certain trade roads. These tolls made going to China and buying/selling spices have almost a negative net gain which is pretty bad if you want to make profit.
