Civil rights activists known as "Freedom Riders" rode interstate buses into the segregated South in order to protest a variety of civil rights violations. Along the way, Freedom Riders were met with great hostility, and many were arrested for violating local Jim Crow laws. The first Freedom Ride left Washington, D.C., on May 4, 1961.
