Confederation was an important part of Canadian history, the birth of Canada as the nation we know today. Unfortunately, confederation is mired by the lack of respect for the rights of first nations people during its creation.The agreements of confederation left the land rights and freedoms of first nations in the hands of the federal government, which responded to receiving this authority by attempting to suppress the native culture and force assimilation upon them, by creating policies such as The Gradual Civilization Act, The Indian Act, and then the tragedy of residential schools.
