aug 24, 1572 - St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre

Description:

Following a breakout of civil violence between Huguenots (French Calvinists) and Catholics, a savage attack on Huguenots occured in Paris.

The king's sister Margaret of Valois married the Protestant Henry of Navarre, which was intended to reconcile the two groups. However, Huguenot leaders were massacred by the king's soldiers. Other Protestants were killed and their house looted. The violence spread, where thousands of Protestants were killed.

The massacre led to a renewal of the wars of religion which continued for decades.
