Description:
After civil war between Protestants and Catholics in the Netherlands and between the Dutch provinces and Spain, the ten southern provinces came under control of Spanish Habsburg forces. The seven northern provinces of the Netherlands formed the Union of Utrecht. In 1581 they declared their independence from Spain.
