Johnny Depp had a fun story to tell last spring about his engagement ring, after he popped the question to Amber Heard over the winter.

It was actually a woman’s ring, the actor explained. He had bought it for the actress and model, but it was too big for her – so he got her a different one, and began wearing the other one himself.

Well, now it seems that ring is gone, and has been replaced by a new one – which looks like it could be a wedding band, or at least a less feminine man-gagement ring. PEOPLE spotted the new ring Wednesday as Depp attended the Los Angeles premiere of his new film Mortdecai.

So, could the new ring mean that Depp, 51, and Heard, 28, have secretly tied the knot? Reps for the pair have not commented.

The actor has always been reticent about discussing his personal life.

The two recently fended off breakup rumors, but they looked as affectionate as ever earlier this month while attending the 8th Annual Heaven Gala in Los Angeles together.

Depp and Heard surfaced as a couple in fall 2012 and got engaged in January 2013. “They couldn’t be happier to be engaged,” a source told PEOPLE last year. “They’re excited to spend the rest of their lives together.”
