On May 15, 1764, the Boston Town Meeting asked their representatives to the Massachusetts General Court [Legislature] to use their "power and influence in maintaining the invaluable Rights and Privileges of the Province…If Taxes are laid upon us in any shape without ever having a Legal Representative where they are laid, are we not reduced from the Character of Free Subjects to the miserable state of tributary Slaves?"
