oct 27, 1915 - Drifting on the Antarctic
Description:
The crews were now isolated from the packed ice with no means of communication with the outside world, no ship, and limited supplies. The ice that the men were standing on began breaking up as spring came. Shackleton ordered his men to abandon the camp and marched westward to the nearest land. Although Shackleton led his men well with leadership and charisma, it turned out that they had traveled 30 miles east because of the drift ice. However, he spotted Elephant island and led his crews there with the three lifeboats.
"Thus, after a year's incessant battle with the ice, we had returned to almost the same latitude we had left with such high hopes and aspirations twelve months previously; but under what different conditions now! Our ship crushed and lost and we ourselves drifting on a piece of ice at the mercy of the winds"
