jan 1, 1620 - New Method
Description:
Novum Organum, published in 1620, was written by Sir Francis Bacon in order to advocate for the use of more scientific processes to make claims. He believed the teaching methods and reasoning skills of his age were greatly lacking. Novum Organum is Latin and can be translated as "new instrument of science" or "new method/tool." Bacon saw a great need for a change in how certain claims were made in society; he believed a process of reasoning was better than faulty mental constructions frequented by the past and during his time. His reasoning process required the use of observation, experimentation, and reasoning to arrive at a conclusion. The aforementioned process is the basis for the modern-day scientific method. Bacon described the need for inductive reasoning, going first from a small claim and building up to larger ones. Overall, Bacon's goal for the text was to help society make a move towards greater experimentation, observation, and analysis instead of just logic-based arguments for claims. His ideas and process helped the development of scientific fields and future discoveries.
