sep 29, 2014 - DAILY MAIL EXCLUSIVE: Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 starts production with crew arriving...and Johnny Depp set to join them next year

Description:

Hollywood blockbuster Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 has started production at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast.

The fifth instalment in the Disney franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, is set to start shooting in mid-February at locations in and around Australia's most popular tourist destination.

The news comes as a relief to the local film industry after doubts whether a $US20.2 million incentive payment from the Australian government would be enough to lure the production away from South Africa and Mexico, where producers were also in discussions.

Work is said to have begun in earnest last week and casting directors are getting set to look for Australian actors to join the A-List cast, says a source employed on the production.

'It's with great relief I can say we're here to say,' she told the Daily Mail Australia.

'The production office has been set up, work is beginning on the sound stages and we're aiming to shoot in early 2015.

'We've put a call out to talent agents for a few local parts.'

Cameras are said to start rolling in February, with Johnny Depp returning to play the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Orlando Bloom told fans at Oz Comic Con in September that he too is 'in discussions' to return to the franchise.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 will be a big boost to the Australian industry, with the budget said to be somewhere around the $US250 million mark.

The large scale production will employ hundreds of local professionals who had been struggling to pick up work since Gods Of Egypt, San Andreas and The Water Diviner called cut this year.

Village Roadshow Studios has been the location for other high profile shoots such as The Chronicles Of Narnia: Voyage Of The Dawn Treader and Angelina Jolie's Unbroken.

It was originally looked at as a location to film the fourth Pirates film, On Stranger Tides, before production moved elsewhere.

It has the largest water tank facility in the Southern Hemisphere which allows crews to shoot extensive underwater and aquatic scenes.

Several other off-site locations in South East Queensland have also been flagged, such as the Southport Seaway and Cleveland Point.

Hopes were raised back in August when the Daily Mail Australia revealed exclusively that two Disney location scouts had been spotted touring Village Roadshow Studios on behalf of the production.

Two days later they visited Fox Studios in Sydney, which Sir Ridley Scott had also viewed as a possible location to film Prometheus 2 back in May.

Disney had originally intended to shoot David Fincher's adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea here Down Under with Brad Pitt at the helm.

But after the production fell through, the Australian government was able to repurpose the monetary incentive for Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Disney are yet to officially announce they are filming in Australia, and Minister for the Arts Senator George Brandis could not be reached for comment.

Australian Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush is also reportedly coming back to star as Captain Barbossa, but no word yet on whether supermodel Gemma Ward will return after her brief cameo as a vicious mermaid in the last film.
