sep 9, 1829 - cornelius Vanderbilt begins his steamboat business

Description:

Vanderbilt quit school at 11 years old to work on the waterfront. by 1810 he bought his first boat with money borrowed from his parents. He used that boat to ferry passengers between Staten island and new york city. During the war of 1812, he expanded his operations to a small fleet. Following the war, he expanded his fleet even more but in 1818 he sold all of his boats to be a steamship captain for Thomas Gibbons. He worked for Gibbons for a decade before he gained enough capital to start his own steamship company in 1829.
