dec 1, 1575 - Battle of Haldighaati
1576
Description:
Akbar's campaign of Mewar
Haldighaati (mountain pass in the hills of the Aravalli Range)
Maan Singh I of Amber(Akbar's representative)
vs
Maharana Pratap (Rana of Mewar was his father)
Emperor Akbar sent many diplomatic missions to convince Maharana Pratap to become a vassal of the Mughals but all of them failed to yield a truce.
The purpose behind these diplomatic missions was to both conclude the ongoing Mughal-Rajput wars and gain access to the rest of Mewar which would secure communication and supply lines to Gujarat, then a vibrant economic powerhouse of the Mughal Empire.
In anticipation of war, the Rana had devastated the entire territory up to Chittor so that the
Mughal forces might get no food or fodder.
Apart from select Rajput forces, the rana’s van consisted of the Afghan contingent led by Hakim Khan Sur. Thus the battle of Haldighati was not a struggle between the Hindus and the Muslims, or between the Indians and the foreigners.
A small force of the Bhils also accompanied Rana's Army.
Rana escapes out of the war and carries out guerilla warfare later.
When Akbar moved to Lahore to stabilise the situation in the N-W, Rana Pratap took the advantage of the situation and recovered many of his territories, including Kumbhalgarh and the areas near Chittor. But he could
not recover Chittor itself During this period, he built a new capital, Chavand, near modern Dungarpur. He died in 1597 at the young age of 51, due to an internal injury incurred by him while trying to draw a stiff bow.
