jan 5, 1965 - Malcolm X assasination. [SOCIAL]

Description:

Assassinated by NOI in 1965.

His ideas were hugely influential after his death and gave rise to the Black Power movement. His ideas had a profound and, in the end, overwhelmingly negative impact on the mainstream civil rights movement.

His teachings were embraced by Stokeley Carmichael and Floyd McKissick, who became leaders of SNCC and CORE respectively. The unity of the civil rights movement was broken by Black Power.

SNCC ceased to exist in the early 1970s, torn apart by division. Black Power, inspired by Malcolm X’s teachings, rejected non-violence and evicted whites from the civil rights movement.

Black Power advocated black supremacy and violent resistance and the result was fragmentation of the civil rights movement and loss of much white support.
It inspired the rioting of the late 1960s, the trigger for which was police brutality. Three “long, hot summers” of rioting started in the Watts district of Los Angeles in August 1965. This militancy and violence was one reason why public support for the cause of civil rights began to wane in the later 1960s.

Black Panthers founded 1966 led by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. Rejected integration; called for black separatism. For three years, the Panthers received national attention through their armed parades of ‘self-defence’ in uniform that included berets and dark glasses. Crushed by the FBI in the early 1970s.

Evidence for AAs hindering their own progress.
