dec 26, 1950 - Du Bois arrested as Soviet Agent [SOCIAL]
Description:
NAACP suffered somewhat in the immediate post-war era. In the Cold War climate, any kind of radical activity or attempt to upset the status quo was questioned. Du Bois was arrested as a Soviet agent in 1951; the NAACP found it difficult to hold meetings because of accusations of communism and the states of Alabama and Louisiana banned it completely in the mid-1950s, accusing it of being too radical. Forced to fight expensive battles to establish its legality, the NAACP lost money that could have gone towards civil rights legal cases. Evidence of the Cold War being a hindrance in some ways, to civil rights advances.
