Description:

Governor William Phips issues a commission for the special Court of Oyer (to hear) and Terminer (to decide) for the cases of witchcraft in Salem Village.

He appoints John Hathorne, Nathaniel Saltonstall, Bartholomew Gedney, Peter Sergeant, Samuel Sewall, Wait Still Winthrop and Lieutenant Governor William Stoughton as judges.
