The Invention of the Steamboat greatly reduced both the time and expense of shipping goods to market. They were extremely important in the growth of the U.S. economy before the Civil War. Robert Fulton invented the steamboat. The steam powered engines allowed them to go up the Mississippi as well as down. Costs of goods diminished, and profits were greater.
