mar 24, 1865 - The Freedman's bureau is set up [ECONOMIC]
Description:
Set up to support freed slaves. It provided food, shelter, hospitals and education.
Set up two universities where black lawyers, scientists and teachers were trained.
Between 1865-66 the Bureau spent $17 million on setting up 4000 schools and 100 hospitals.
However, the Bureau was closed in 1872 after the decline of radical Republicanism.
Evidence of Congress helping, but it was short-lived.
