Description:
Ida B Wells was a reforming journalist who led an anti-lynching campaign in the 1890s. Her book 'The Red Record' demonstrated that the main reason for lynchings was economic and that the accusation of rape so commonly used was simply an excuse to justify the mob violence. However, although her campaign attracted significant publicity and attention, she failed to get any commitment from Congress or President for a federal anti-lynching law so the problem was never tackled in federal courts. The southern defence - that a federal anti-lynching law would interfere with states' rights - always won the day.
This is an example of own actions of AAs, but also shows the limitations to these actions in the context of the 1980s.
