jan 9, 1877 - Hayes compromise [SOCIAL/POLTICAL/ECONOMC]]

Description:

Ended Congressional reconstruction.

Troops were withdrawn from the south and the new Redemption governments (Democrat Controlled) emerged across the South.

Voting qualifications were imposed across the South, such as poll tax, literacy clauses, property qualifications and the grandfather clause.

By 1915, almost every southern state had introduced voting qualifications and the near elimination of the black vote in the south was all but complete.

In practice, these qualifications combined with violence and intimidation prevented AAs from exercising their right to vote until the 1960s.

Evidence of Federal Government hindering civil rights - President Hayes abandoning the south, southern state legislatures passing restrictive voting qualifications and actions of Supreme Court. Evidence of political opposition to AAs exercising their political rights.
